Favourite Songs From 2008
Favourite Songs From 2008
Here is a list of songs (in no particular order) that were often played on repeat in 2008 on my mp3 device, aswell as a little reason why.
1. 6AM – Life Is Beautiful – This song was recently featured in my “Soundtrack To Today”. The writeup can be found here: http://www.bonniedickson.com/wordpress/?p=448
2. Citizen Cope – Let The Drummer Kick – A friend of mine named Dominik told me about this song. He heard it on a tv show called “So You Think You Can Dance”. I just love the uniqueness of this song.
3. Chevelle – I Get It – This song has a powerful melody and it’s combination with the lyrics offer the perfect song to vent your frustrations through. I just love the chorus:
You're right, I get it It all makes sense, you're the perfect person So bright, so wrong Let's all live in your imaginary life
4. Estelle feat Kanye West – American Boy – I liked this song because it’s a song about adventure and experiencing the U.S. from the eyes of someone who didn’t grow up in North America. Plus it also has a bit of a cute love song element to it.
5. Flyleaf – I’m So Sick – Flyleaf is the first of a few bands that I have recently been exposed to through the PS3 game Rockband. I love the chick vocals and their loud rock sound.
6. In This Moment – All For you – Another great Rockband discovery. Chick lead vocals with more of a pop sound than Flyleaf but stills has an Evanescence vibe. The song is about working on a long distance relationship and not giving up.
7. Junior Boys – In The Morning – This is an extremely catchy and simple song. I love the beat to it. It’s another one Dominik heard on the TV show “So You Think You Can Dance”.
8. Kay Starr – I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm – Cool soothing female vocals that sound like they are coming through an old style of record player, mixed with a good rhythm and swing era sounding horns make this an irresistible song on cold winter days.
9. Robyn – With Every Heartbeat – A motivating song about how hard it is not looking back and wasting time with a toxic relationship. Throw in Robyn’s angelic but strong vocals, violin and a body moving melody and rhythm and it’s hard not to love this song, even if it is about a breakup.
10. Robyn – Be Mine – I think that Robyn is a pro at writting break up songs. “Be Mine” is another great example of how her meaningful lyrics mixed with a great melody and beat can make you love the song even if you’re not going through a breakup.
11. Paramore – Misery Business – Another great band discovery thanks to the PS3 game “Rockband”. Paramore’s singer Hayley Williams is a petite girl with a unique sounding voice, a fierce amount of energy and bright coloured hair. This song is so catchy that it Hayley’s voice makes it the perfect mix of rock and pop.
12. Priestess – Lay Down – Is a band from “Guitar Hero 3” another music game similar to “Rockband” for the PS3. They have an awesome sound, a mix between hair metal, classic rock and a pinch of Danko Jones.
13. Rihanna – Don’t Stop The Music – I have a weakness for songs where the singer makes requests to the DJ. I don’t know why because it’s kinda cheesy, but maybe because it’s always the type of song that I would be listening to in a club and think the same thing…
DJ let it play
I just can’t refuse it
Like the way you do this
Keep on rockin’ to it
Please don’t stop the
Please don’t stop the music
14. Lady GaGa – Just Dance – I love how catchy and true the lyrics are in this song. It makes me think back to my days of dancing at the Joker Nightclub and being a little too intoxicated to see…
What’s going on on the floor?
I love this record baby but I can’t see straight anymore
Keep it cool, what’s the name of this club?
I can’t remember but it’s alright, a-alright
Just dance, gonna be okay
15. Silik – Catharsis – This is one of the new bands that I discovered through a software called “iLike”. It’s not related to apple or anything. it’s just a program you install with whatever music playing software you have on your computer and it will tell you what other bands in the world sound similar to the songs you listen to. This program was around long before Apple’s “Genius” software that is of the same nature.
16. Scars on Broadway – Serious – Scars on Broadway are the old members of the band “System of A Down” without the lead singer. They have a sound very similar to Billy Talent but with a bit more of a political spin on their songs. I love this track.
Because you’re too serious, You’re gonna make me delirious
17. Scars on Broadway – They Say – This song is in “Rockband” and it’s why I know this band. It’s a fun and easy song to play and the vocal style of his exaggerated “talking” singing is so unique that I love it. The wailing guitar in the chorus just draws you in while you listen.
18. Tegan & Sara – Walking With A Ghost – Acoustic guitar sound with simple chick vocals then blend into a more built up studio sound with drums and more instruments. It’s a simple song but that is what I really like about it.
19. Tegan & Sara – Superstar – I like how their vocals are bouncing off of each others as if the two girls were telling their sides of a story. Then it builds into a song with a great rhythm with interesting lyrics about being a “Superstar”.
20. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Date With The Night – I love the repetitiveness of the guitar riffs and her screamy raw vocals. It’s up beat, dirty rock and you couldn’t ask for much more.
21. Kings Of Leon – Sex On Fire – I first heard this song within 24 hours of arriving in Australia and I’ve heard it every day since. I’m a little sick of the song but it’s catchy simplicity was what drew me to it in the first place. Plus I can’t help but think of those beautiful Australian beaches when I hear it.
21 addictive songs for 2008. I wonder what 2009 will bring?
