Gipsy Kings!
On saturday night I took my mom to the Molson Amphitheatre to see the Gipsy Kings live in concert. It was her early birthday present. This was also the first time I had ever been to a concert with my mom. Which I have to say surprises me since we both have such a gigantic love for music. I can’t believe I haven’t dragged her to one or more of the many concerts that I go to. But then come to think of it when they are shows like Iron Maiden that are full of bikers then I don’t blame her :)
The Gipsy Kings had seven lead guitarists and three main vocalists with four backup singers. They have a keyboard player, bongo player, drummer and a bassist. It was really cool to watch how fast their fingers move along the guitars to make their awesome music. I found myself comparing their guitar methods to those of some of my fave heavy metal guitarists and the technique is almost the same. The skill level needs to be quite high to hammer the strings that quickly. It was just interesting to see the skill of the guitarists be so similar to those of hard rock musicians and hear the music coming out of it that was so different.
The Gipsy Kings played three songs that I recognized and a whole bunch that I hadn’t heard before. I’m guessing that they have a new album. Listening to spanish lyrics for two hours is an interesting experience as well. They did everything in spanish, including speaking to the crowd. So I basically didn’t understand a word they said but at least the music was good.
My fave song of the night was their encore tune called Volare. They didn’t play Bamboleo and I couldn’t help but overhear the crowds dissapointment as everyone cleared out at the end of the concert. It is clearly a favourite. I supposed the Gipsy Kings are tired of playing it.
Overall the night was a blast! They got the whole crowd up and dancing and the music was fantastic. It was fun to finally put some faces to musicians that I grew up listening to.
