Movie Awards Style Baking
My sister is the baker of our family, where I prefer to play with camera lenses. I don’t have the baking talent that she has. I haven’t been able to bake any desert from scratch without forgetting something, measuring incorrectly etc. I’ve also been known to make a mess of “straight from the box” cakes. I was 7 years old when I added 3 cups of water instead of 3 tablespoons to angel food cake. It still looked like soup after two hours in the oven. But hey I was just a kid! That doesn’t count right?
The good news is I’ve been successfully making brownies from the box for 3 years. I know they turn out great since they disappear within minutes of putting the plate in front of my friends.
So I decided to try baking from scratch to celebrate the 2010 Academy Awards this year. My friend Adam recommended a few fun and cute recipes on Bakerella.com. They had cookies that stood like Oscar Statues, cake lollipops (which I’d love to try) & Movie Popcorn Brownies. I went with the Movie Popcorn Brownies, as those seemed the least complicated. They turned out surprisingly well considering my baking skills. I can’t take all the credit as I did have some help from my guy. The icing was a little yellow in colour instead of white, but that’s because I melted the frozen butter into a liquid instead of just softening it. The brownie itself was a bit dry, cooked it 3 mins too long, but the icing made up for the dryness.
The verdict… they were still yummy even after my mistakes. But I’ll be sticking to the brownies from the box from now on.
