Danko Jones in Concert

Last night Tuesday December 5th, 2006, I saw Danko Jones play at the Mod Club in Toronto.

It was the first of many shows in the Edge 102.1 Electric Xmas Concert Series which supports the Daily Bread Food Bank.

The concert opened at 9pm with a band called Rocketface.  This three piece was incredible.  They had a catchy pop/rock sound that wasn’t too cheesy.  The lead singer was also the drummer.  That takes a lot of talent.  They had a lot of energy and the girls in the crowd were dancing.

The next opening act was a band called Illuminati.  Also a three piece with the bassist as the lead vocals.  They had some technical difficulties at the top of their set and started 15 minutes late.  Their guitarist was quite angry and got them to play the first song without him.  Once they got it together they sounded good.  The guitar was good but otherwise their music wasn’t really memorable.

Then it was time for the main event.  Danko Jones!  Danko Jones also consists of a three piece, Danko on guitar, a bassist and drums.  I’ve gotta admit for the start of thier set I didn’t really pay as much attention to the music as I did to my picture taking.  I managed to get up close and snapped a bunch of pictures with my pathetic 3.2 megapixel camera.  Cell phones have more megapixels than my camera does.  Sheesh!  But that’s another story.

After a few songs I made it to the other side of the stage.  Where I enjoyed some of my favourite tracks such as “First Date”, “Bounce”, “Mango Kid” and many more.  The beauty of Danko Jones’ songs are that they are short, sweet and rockin’!

Danko and band gave it a good effort.  I have to admit I’ve seen him perform with more energy in previous shows.    I believe that has to do with the crowd.  He’s an artist that feeds off the energy of the fans.  Danko tried his best last night but the tuesday night sleepy crowd just wasn’t paying attention or something.  It was a little dissapointing.

Overall I give this show an 8 out of 10.  Great opening acts, great overall venue sound,  good lighting and an awesome Headlining act.
