Melbourne – Makes me miss Sydney
I have to be careful saying that as Melbournians are pretty protective of their city and they all think that you should love it here so much that you wont’ want to leave. Well I want to leave right now…but I can’t. I have to stick it out and give the city a fair chance. But it’s challenging after being to such a great city like Sydney. I just don’t feel right/comfortable here and it’s not very nice looking.
The flight to Melbourne was fine. It was my first Quantas flight and the domestic terminal is easy to get through. The flight was short too only just over an hour.
Melbourne the city is pretty spread out compared to Syd. I checked into my hostel (my first hostel ever) and left right away to go exploring. I took the first Tram I could find out of the downtown to the beach/St. Kilda and Luna Park. The Tram system is extremely confusing. Not enough signage or directions are given. I managed to make it to Luna Park and St. Kilda beach but I didn’t really feel safe there. It was like a cold October day at a nearly empty rundown Wasaga Beach. I took some pictures and it was freezing. There is a very strong cold wind coming off the water and I ended up getting wind burn on my cheeks :(
It took me 30 minutes to figure out which Tram to take back to the downtown. Even still I got off the Tram at a place that I had seen earlier in the day because I wasn’t sure where the Tram was going.
I tried to go into the Melbourne Casino, called the “Crown” but they don’t allow backpacks and I didn’t want to check my camera bag since I wasn’t planning on gambling anyways.
So I went and found some cookies and cream gelato and sat and watched the water while the sun was setting. I don’t know what water it was, but their rowing team was training on it.
I then found a place for some dinner. Finally a meal for less than $20, it was basically plain spaghetti with olive oil, chillies and parm cheese. I also tried a local beer called VB (Victoria Bitter). I figured I should try that since I am in the province of Victoria. It would drink it again.
Now I am at the hostel and using the internet area and avoiding going back to my shared room. I’m sharing in a girls only room, but one of the girls looks like a guy and none of them are very friendly. I’m super glad that I have my day tour tomorrow and then that I am leaving on friday. Because so far I really don’t like this city. It’s bumming me out.
